This is a tough one to tackle. Let’s start with this. Acoustic guitar or electric guitar? For electric guitar (of which I own many) I was going crazy with different brands. Tried every electric guitar string in a reasonable price range and read reviews endlessly. Reviews will get you nowhere. A personal opinion though might. So, which ones do you choose?
Being in a rock band, strings and cutting through the mix are essential. The 10 best or top 5 is a bunch of bullshit. What works for me might not work for you. I use Elixir NANOWEB Nickel Plated Steel 11/49 on ALL my electric guitars now. It just became easier for me to decide on one brand and gauge/thickness. I have huge hands, so 11’s which are kind of thick work well for me. They do come in different sizes/gauges. Most guitars come with 10’s. on them such as Ernie Ball slinky 10’s 9’s etc. I have tried these. They just don’t work for me. But they might be a good fit for you. Most people love them.
Acoustic guitars. Now on an acoustic, strings will naturally be on the thicker side already. D’addario phosphor bronze (fancy schmancy name) strings are extremely popular for acoustic guitar. I used to get them on all my acoustics but recently began being more specific about manufacturer strings. Only on my acoustics though. I think they are all 12’s gauge.
A Nylon stringed guitar. Hmm… Now Nylon strings are a different deal in themselves. For me personally, I have not played nylon since I was very young. I wouldn’t even know where to steer you on that note. That sounds dumb. No pun intended. But Classical guitar and Flamenco style guitars use them often.
As with everything guitars. You will have to test all the waters then decide. It could take a lifetime. But remember, the best musicians know they don’t have that long. So figure it out and decide.
