This is a very short blog on “Instrument” cables. It does not need to go too far into depth, so here it is.
Instrument cables. They are NOT the same as speaker cables! Please know the difference. Speaker cables and instrument cables are two different animals. Instrument cables can damage an amp head if used to plug into a cab. As a result you are left powerless. Literally. If you don’t know what a “head” or “cab” are, I will leave a link here- How Guitar Amps Work So who makes the best cable or the most affordable cable? Yes the big question.
Well it’s kind of like this. We all have HDMI cables for our TV or something in our homes correct? They did a study showing the Gold tip cable flow/current and all that garb compared to a standard cable. The results were exactly the same. Meaning it is all a marketing scheme to make you buy buy buy!
I researched for the video I watched about that but couldn’t find it. Sorry.
This goes to show you that preferences are all yours. However, the cheap stupid little instrument cables that comes in the box of a Chinese made guitar, just throw it in the garbage. We are not even talking about those here.
In 2018 Christy Doran, a jazz guitarist helped with playing through the Worlds longest guitar cable! It was 1955 feet long! The “experiment” took place in the Swiss Alps. Anyway, you will lose tone after 20′ to 25′ of cable so be cautious with that. My instrument cables are all about 6′ to 10′ long. I have no need to go further than that anyway. Another thing that will help extremely is being able to see where your cable is. This Ernie Ball cable has a glow in the dark look to it. They do come in different colors. If you play well, nobody is going to notice the color of your cable. But I will tell you that the most embarrassing thing is to step on your cable and unplug yourself while in the midst of a tune. Check out the cable below. Trust me on this, you need to know where your cable is at all times!
There are many high end names out there. Some are all marketing where you’ll pay for the name and others are really good. Mogami cables for one are at the top of the chain. For your information Gold tip connectors are not terrible!
Just don’t fall for any gimmicks while purchasing a cable. Back to the Mogami cables, I do not have those but if you are a stickler for tone, check em’ out. Planet Waves, Ernie Ball, Pig Hog, GLS Audio, Fender Deluxe Series. These are some of the (and I do mean only some) top instrument cables at the moment. 5/25/2020
