Guitar straps. Now this is an easy one. Or is it? I have to tell you, I have tried every type of strap out there. They are NOT created equal! Big fluffy shoulder boulder straps to thin nylon straps and beautiful leather straps. When it comes to comfort do not get cheap on your strap if you intend to stand!
I have played acoustic duo’s, trio’s, and electric guitar full band gigs, and trust me, at some point you will stand up. And when your guitar strap pulls and tugs on your shirt /shoulder, you will be pissed off. However, if it slides too much, it will get away from you, and you will be pissed off. Haha!
Sounds like a no win situation. But it is not. Like anything else guitar/musically related, you simply have to try it all out and find what works best for you. Sure I can tell you “buy this one” or “buy that one” “These are the BEST ever!” But that is not the case. I have purchased many straps over the years and the strap you purchase depends on many factors. For example, your short, no shirt, strap size, strap material. Perhaps one strap will fit all your needs. It depends on what works for you. You still need it.
Jodi Head makes beautiful straps. The one below is 3″ Marble Sandy Snake Skin. Just remember, you get what you pay for. So pay many times over the years or pay once and fall in love. The strap below is just one style of Jodie Head Straps.
I personally own several types of low end to extremely high end straps. My guitars (there is no reason to own just one) all have there own straps that work great for that guitar. So it may even be something like that. Also consider will it slip off or not. High end guitars need a locking mechanism. So make sure your favorite strap can handle one.
Prince had a strap made for him by Get’m Get’m straps in California. They are about $20 to around $100+.
I personally own one that is identical to Prince’s. It was not overly expensive, nor was it the cheapest one out there either but, it holds up a $4000 guitar that i adore. So is it worth it? You bet. There are many private custom guitar strap companies out there. Just be sure it will not let go of your guitar.
Just a foot note
I have purchased another Get’m Get’m strap that is very very cool looking. It was about $60 on reverb. Very leathery with some brass appointments. It was brand new with tags still on it. However the guitar shop I purchased it from had it in storage for a long time, leaving something sticky on the entire strap. It does not come off on your hands or anywhere else, it is just weird. A great strap though! Just weird. I use it all the time.
